They have day and night buses, prices will vary according to the time of departure and type of bus.
Besides, Terres Rouges can also organize a pick up by one of the private minibuses that do the trip daily. It’s usually around 8 hours, but you travel “Cambodian way” with huge loads of merchandise and passengers that are easily sick…
Renting a private minibus (12 seats, but no room to store the luggage except than on the back seats…) can be interesting for people traveling in larger groups, it costs 200$ one way.
From Phnom Penh to Banlung on a motorcycle
With a bike in good repair, an experienced motorcyclist can reach Banlung in 6 to 8 hours
From Siem Reap to Banlung
It’s a 6 hours drive, it costs 200$ for a private car or 15$ for a seat in a minibus.
From Laos to Banlung & vice versa
The road crossing at Trapeang Kriel is roughly 75km North of Steung Treng, it’s a one hour drive that costs 5$ per person.
Cambodian visas are available at the border (Don’t forget to bring a photo!). Open 08:00-17:00. Visas are only available at the road crossing, not at the river crossing. Laos visas are now also available at the border. No special permits required from either Cambodia or Laos. Expect small extra fees for “stamps” on both sides of the border…
From Steung Treng to Banlung the trip takes 3 hours and costs 5$ too. Minibuses can be found in front of Steung Treng port and next to the market (North-East corner) when you are in Banlung.
Upon request, Terres Rouges Lodge can easily arrange a pick up with a private vehicle from the border to Ratanakiri. It costs from 120$ for two persons to 150$ for groups up to 6 people.
From Vietnam to Banlung
If you are in Hoi An, Danang or Hué, it is very easy to cross into Cambodia, it’s even one of the best ways to enter this country as it is a very quiet border crossing, there is no waiting nor hassle or extorsion as in Poïpet at the Thai border ! It allows a gentle and progressive discovery of the country, you start with the highlands, go down the Mekong river and proceed to Angkor or Phnom Penh, as you wish, without having to go up and forth like you would when arriving directly in Phnom Penh.
You must first reach Pleïku (Gia Laï province) by road, or plane from Danang (40$ per pers), then the border. There, you don’t need a Cambodian visa beforehand as it can be delivered on the spot (Don’t forget to bring a photo!). However, coming from Cambodia you will need a valid Vietnamese visa delivered in Phnom Penh or any consulate. It takes about 1 hour to cover the new 70km road linking Banlung to the O’Yadao – Le Than border crossing. A seat in a taxi costs around 25-30 000 riels (6 to 8$).
